About Us – Minneapolis Plastic Surgery, Ltd.

As one of the most-respected and longest-existing aesthetic plastic surgery practices in the Minneapolis / St. Paul, Minnesota area, Minneapolis Plastic Surgery, Ltd. has improved the body image and quality of life of thousands of patients since its inception. Our American Board of Plastic Surgery-certified plastic surgeons, Dr. Douglas L. Gervais and Dr. Richard H. Tholen have over 55 years of combined experience performing plastic surgery of the face, breast, and body. Both have been peer-recognized as regional “Top Doctors” by Minneapolis / St. Paul Magazine for multiple years. We now are proud to announce the addition of a third plastic surgeon, Dr. Kuldeep Singh, to our staff. His plastic surgical training at the Mayo Clinic, followed by additional cosmetic surgical fellowships in California and overseas will bring innovation and new ideas to Minneapolis Plastic Surgery. All three surgeons’ goal is to always produce the most natural-looking results rather than a “tight,” unnatural, or operated-on appearance.

Accredited in-office Surgical Facility

Doctors - Accredited in-office Surgical Facility

Minneapolis Plastic Surgery, Ltd. features an on-site nationally-accredited (QUAD A, formerly AAAASF) surgical center with complete local-to-general anesthesia services. As one of few plastic surgical practices that offer this total level of care, our  cosmetic surgery patients can receive state-of-the-art outpatient surgery safely and privately in our own dedicated facility, rather than in a hospital or hospital-affiliated surgicenter surrounded by sick patients and nasty viruses or bacteria!

Our Mission

It is the sincere goal of the surgeons and staff at Minneapolis Plastic Surgery, LTD. to provide for our patients the highest-quality plastic surgery experience and most pleasing natural results. To achieve this goal we will abide by the highest professional standards and truthfully represent our capabilities. We will thoroughly inform our patients and scrupulously guard their confidentiality.

We seek to enhance, restore, and refine the natural beauty that every patient already possesses by the creative and skillful application of advanced, but proven, techniques. No surgeon who is honest can guarantee perfect results every time, but we promise that we will strive to provide the best care, effort, and outcomes we are capable of. No one will try harder to surpass your expectations, anywhere.

At Minneapolis Plastic Surgery, LTD. we want to provide our patients with a lasting positive experience that makes them “patients for life,” as well as making us worthy of their recommendation to others.

Reconstructive Surgery (and a Brief History of MPS)

Both Dr. Gervais and Dr. Tholen have completed full, five-year residencies in General Surgery after their M.D. degrees, and both were certified by the American Board of Surgery after successfully completing both written and oral examinations.  They both followed with an additional two years of sub-specialty training in plastic and reconstructive surgery, and both were certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery after rigorous written and oral examinations in this sub-specialty. Dr. Singh completed a six-year integrated plastic surgery fellowship at the Mayo Clinic after medical school, is Board-eligible in Plastic Surgery, and has completed additional cosmetic surgery fellowships since his time at Mayo, both nationally and internationally, joining MPS in 2023.

With over six decades of combined experience since joining Minneapolis Plastic Surgery (Dr. Tholen in 1987, Dr. Gervais in 1996, and Dr. Singh in 2023), all three plastic surgeons bring extensive training in all aspects of anatomy, physiology, and the specifics of surgical expertise to bear on the most difficult reconstructive and challenging cosmetic surgical problems.  However, Minneapolis Plastic Surgery has always been a leader in aesthetic (cosmetic) plastic surgery, often first in introducing advanced new techniques and innovations to other plastic surgeons in the upper Midwest and throughout the country. With the addition of Dr. Singh, MPS has now enhanced their extensive experience with an infusion of new ideas and capabilities.

Minneapolis Plastic Surgery now works with Lending USA to provide patients with more financing options.

A Brief History of MPS (continued)
MPS - First of its kind

For example, Minneapolis Plastic Surgery was the first plastic surgical practice to establish a regional expertise and incorporate with the name “Minneapolis Plastic Surgery, Ltd.” MPS was one of the first plastic surgical practices to establish an in-office operating facility dedicated exclusively to outpatient aesthetic (cosmetic) plastic surgery. MPS was one of the first plastic surgical practices with in-office surgical facilities to offer full (including general) anesthesia services, and to achieve national surgical facility accreditation via QUAD A, formerly AAAASF (American Academy for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgical Facilities) in 1991. When liposuction was first introduced to the United States from Europe in the mid 1980’s, Minneapolis Plastic Surgery was the first plastic surgical practice in the region (before the University of Minnesota or Mayo Clinic) to teach liposuction to other plastic surgeons, and our surgeons were part of the teaching staff and leadership of the Lipolysis Society of North America, now part of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons.

Technology and Complimentary Consultations

Minneapolis Plastic Surgery was the first practice in the region to include computer video imaging in the complimentary consultation process (1988 through the 1990’s), the first plastic surgical practice to purchase and utilize on-site plastic surgery lasers (1988-present), and one of the first area plastic surgery practices to present educational seminars in a comfortable dinner setting to the general public (1988 through the 1990’s).

Minneapolis Plastic Surgery was the first plastic surgical practice to partner with Forefront Dermatology (2022), a physician-run team consisting of nearly 500 physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician’s assistants in over 250 clinics throughout 25 states and the District of Columbia.

Dr. Tholen, Dr. Gervais, and Dr. Singh offer no-charge consultations for our cosmetic surgery patients, so they can confidently obtain multiple consultations and determine which plastic surgical practice and surgeon has the most applicable expertise, tools, technology, on-site surgical center, and caring staff to best accomplish their aesthetic goals.

Because of the high demand for free consultations with our plastic surgeons, our staff will ask for a credit card number in order to schedule a consultation; there is no charge whatsoever for appointments that are kept–you will be charged $100 only if you fail to keep a scheduled appointment, or fail to cancel at least 48 hours in advance of your appointment time–for Monday appointments, you must cancel no later than noon on the previous Thursday; for Tuesday appointments, you must cancel no later than noon on the previous Friday.

Minneapolis Anti-Aging & Skin Clinic (formerly Carillon Clinic)

With the establishment of Carillon Clinic, Ltd. in 1997, a sister corporation owned and operated by the plastic surgeons at Minneapolis Plastic Surgery, this became one of the first plastic surgery/medi-spa partnerships to develop and advance skin/body care services to extend, amplify, and provide longer-term maintenance of their cosmetic surgical capabilities, with post-operative camouflage makeup, laser hair removal, microlaser and other facial peels, Botox, Juvederm, Radiesse, Sculptra, Voluma, Volbella, Kybella, skin pen (micro-needling), platelet-rich plasma (PRP), spider vein treatment, CoolSculpting nonsurgical fat removal, Hydrafacial, Vivace RF (radiofrequency) skin tightening, as well as facial peels including advanced and Obaji peels.

Carillon is now renamed Minneapolis Anti-Aging and Skin Clinic (MAASC), and as of 2022, proud to be partnered with Forefront Dermatology. MAASC offers physician-directed bio-identical hormone replacement therapy and other anti-aging technologies via Sara Sorensen, NP (Nurse Practitioner), and Britney Gorman, PA, (Physician’s Assistant).

MAASC also offers non-surgical fat reduction via the latest CoolSculpting® instrumentation and advances. We have considered this technology for some time, but found it did not meet our expectations in earlier forms. CoolSculpting® was first approved by the FDA for the treatment of fat on flanks (sides) in 2010, and then approved for the stomach in 2012. They developed and introduced better applicators, and a new model for the thighs was approved in 2015. Minneapolis Plastic Surgery continues to offer surgical fat removal via liposuction, but not every patient is a candidate for surgery or wants to undergo an operation and recovery. With MAASC now offering the latest CoolSculpting® advances, we can meet the needs and goals of even more patients requesting a sleeker body.

Many other physicians and non-physicians have subsequently opened skin spas and laser hair removal centers, but MPS and MAASC have been leaders and innovators in offering comprehensive physician supervision, higher standards of care, and more effective treatment options, while many of these competitors have long since closed their doors. Our plastic surgeons have been recognized for their expertise in this area as they are medical directors for both MAASC  locations (across from MPS’ plastic surgical offices in Golden Valley, as well as in Maple Grove).

Teachers of Proven Techniques & Instrumentation

Minneapolis Plastic Surgery was the first to offer ultrasonic liposuction to the five-state area, and we continue to evaluate and offer the latest proven techniques and instrumentation to our patients. MPS does not strive to be first in everything (MPS believes that lipodissolve, Mesotherapy, Lifestyle lifts, and some laser and non-laser skin and cellulite-tightening procedures are unproven and potentially unsafe); we strive to be the best at what really works. The plastic surgeons at Minneapolis Plastic Surgery have taught laser surgery, cosmetic surgery, as well as numerous other plastic surgery topics on a local, regional, national, and even international level, and have been elected by their peers to the highest offices in state and regional Plastic Surgical professional societies. Both Dr. Gervais and Dr. Tholen have published in the peer-reviewed plastic surgical literature, and both perform plastic surgery for charitable causes of their choice.

While none of these distinctions and achievements can guarantee a specific result or happy patient, it is clear that Dr. Singh, Dr. Tholen, and Dr. Gervais have distinguished themselves not by TV appearances or flashy advertising campaigns, but by continuing to educate themselves and others in the application of the newest and best techniques and practices in aesthetic (cosmetic) plastic surgery. Their extensive background in reconstructive surgery has given all three surgeons the sound foundation to apply basic as well as more esoteric principles to patients with aesthetic plastic surgical concerns.

Emphasis on Aesthetic (Cosmetic) Surgery

Since well over 90% of both Dr. Tholen’s and Dr. Gervais’ surgical caseloads have been elective aesthetic (cosmetic) surgery for many years, they have both focused exclusively on cosmetic surgery since 2007.  Dr. Singh has been singularly focused on cosmetic plastic surgery since joining MPS after his 6 years of Mayo Clinic training in plastic surgery, as well as his additional cosmetic surgery fellowships in California and Turkey. This does not automatically mean that our surgeons will no longer perform reconstructive surgeries, but MPS no longer accepts insurance, HMO, Medicare/Medicaid, or private insurance reimbursement for reconstructive surgical problems. Many patients with high-deductible policies choose to have their surgical care at MPS, as they self-pay to the deductible limits anyway. Cost quotes are available at the time of each complimentary consultation for all cosmetic surgeries, after our plastic surgeons personally examine you and address your questions and concerns.

The Next Step Forward

Dr. Gervais and Dr. Tholen are proud to announce that both Minneapolis Plastic Surgery and Minneapolis Anti-Aging & Skin Clinic are now (as of December 2022) partnered with Forefront Dermatology, a physician-run team consisting of nearly 500 physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician’s assistants in over 250 clinics throughout 25 states and the District of Columbia. MPS is the first plastic surgical practice to join Forefront, and we share their goal to be the skin care and cosmetic surgery providers of choice for the communities and areas we serve, providing world-class aesthetic surgery and skin care while preserving, leading, and advancing the private practice of Dermatology and Plastic Surgery. We are also proud to offer the talents and plastic surgical capabilities of Dr. Kuldeep Singh, who joined MPS in May, 2023.
