How Your Surgeon’s Skill Impacts Breast Augmentation Outcomes
posted by Dr. Douglas L. Gervais MD, F.A.C.S.
All board-certified plastic surgeons possess the technical skills to perform breast augmentations, but only the best plastic surgeons have the artistic eye and experience to consistently craft beautiful breasts.
Many things go into a successful breast surgery. My team and I have developed a system in which we spend a great deal of time with each patient asking questions and listening to their needs and desires. A thorough exam allows me to make important assessments regarding implant size, profile and positioning. Do they need a lift?
Finally, each patient chooses their implant size with guidance from me and my staff. We have a sizing process that we have used for over 25 years that has proven very successful.
All of this time spent with the patient and information gathering leads to the big day….surgery day! This is where my surgical skill and years of expertise blend with my artistic eye for plastic surgery. I’ve honed this gift and I am able to visualize what the end result will look like before I’m even finished. This intuition is informed by over 3,000 breast augmentations over 25 years of my career.
What makes an artistically beautiful breast? Well that depends on the person being asked. The old saying “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder” applies to breast surgery. This is why it is so important to listen to and ask questions of every patient. This allows me and my team to make adjustments to each patient’s operative plan so that they will achieve their desired result. Here are a few examples of the different types of outcomes our patients have desired:

Many patients want larger and more full breasts:
Others want a more specific shape with lower pole fullness or the “swoopy” breast.”
Another group of women who have not had children desire a more natural look:
These are just a few examples of the wide variety of requests that we see every day. Not all of these results appeal to every person, but for each of these patients, their results were perfect!
